It Hurts...

Each time AMU comes in the limelight, its bound to be another bad reason. Previously it reservation issue, now its over the issue of sexual discrimination and harassment in the campus. Its been one year since I left the institute. No incident of sexual harassment I observed in my six years of stay there. But looking at the situation there I believe it is always possible there. The gender ratio in departments is pathetic. You will hardly find a woman faculty member and student in different departments. There is a separate Women's college at schooling and graduate level. Girls are not allowed to go out, while there is no restriction on boys.
The previous incident of snatching of shawl from a journalism student is a shameful incident but worst part is the way the university reacted and handled the situation[read story]. Such incidents occur in other institutes also, there are always a few miscreants everywhere. But the way everyone supported them and criticised the girl for wearing western dresses is sad. It indicates the sick mentality of people over there. The efforts of that girl to fight against this discrimination are appreciable. This brought the issue to the national level and gave moral support to other students to protest against such incidents.
Later two more incidents were reported[ read here 1 , 2 ], which I think are because of the initiative taken by that girl. Many cases have begun to come into light, which previously were never reported. But even now the reaction of university administration is deplorable. Even these girls are allegedly threaten by the administration.[see here]
The situation has to be improved. The mindset of people has to be changed. Women should not be marginalised. The first step that should be taken is to improve the sex ratio both among faculty and students. Also the system of separate college for women should be abandoned and women should be allowed the same facilities and departments as their male counterparts.
